Physical Rehabilitation Program
There are two kinds of clinics in YAKKUM rehabilitation centre, a general clinic and a dental clinic. In the first, run by a doctor and 2 nurses, we provide medical treatment, surgery, and post-surgical treatment. The dental clinic, runs by a part-time dentist and supported by a nurse, serves patients with dental problems.
This unit helps both post-operative patients and non-operative patients to increase their functional mobility. At present, we have two physiotherapists at the centre. In the physiotherapy department, we also provide individual consultation and assist the tailoring of aids.
In this unit, our occupational therapists assist the patients so that they become physically independent. We have both in-patient and out-patient programs. For the in-patient program, our occupational therapists train the clients inside the centre, whereas the out-patient program is conducted outside the centre, for example, ADL (Activities of Daily Living) training at the client's house.
Some of the activities conducted by our occupational therapists are described below:
a. Activities of Daily Living
Our occupational therapists enable clients to do daily activities such as transferring (bed to wheelchair or vice versa), dressing, eating , drinking, and toileting on their own.
For instance, our occupational therapists train a client with an amputated hand how to eat and drink. If needed, occupational therapists will design a special aid so that this client is able to eat and drink.
b. Household Activites
The disabled will also be trained to do some household activities such as washing clothes, ironing, and cooking .
c. Leisure Time Activities
We also provide some relaxing activities for clients with disabilities, such as playing outside the occupational therapy room.
We provide physical-mobility aids to clients such as braces, orthopedic shoes, wheelchairs, prothese s , hard corsets, and splints.
There are 2 departments are involved in making the aids:
a. Prosthetics and Orthotics Department
In this unit, various kinds of aids are made. There are braces, protheses, crutches, walkers, corsets, etc. Currently, we have 10 staff in this department.
b.Metal Workshop
This unit supplies materials needed by the Prosthetics and Orthotics Departrment such as brace locks, ankle braces, nuts and bolts for protheses, and screws. We have 6 staff members in this unit. |
